Hey there, time traveller!

I just wanted to share this story!

My son, Reeve Cahoon, is a six-year-old boy with Sturge-Weber syndrome. He has physical differences (a large port-wine stain birthmark on his face and body, hemiplegic cerebral palsy following three brain surgeries that removed half of his brain) and medical complications. He’s had a very long journey. As a parent we worry about kids teasing and whatnot.

We moved into our neighbourhood two years ago, and at the time, some kids down the road were running a lemonade stand to raise money for the Children’s Hospital. Of course we stopped and gave them our support.

Reeve was going to kindergarten this year. I drove by these kids and their parents daily. One day I got out and asked if anyone of them went to the school he would be attending. One girl, Peyton Singer, goes there. I explained about Reeve and his port-wine stain and asked if kids were curious.

She and her neighbours, Jesse and Jacob Trager, always say hi to Reeve whenever we walk or bike by when they’re playing.

This weekend they came by our house twice and we weren’t home, so I messaged Peyton’s mom and said we were home today.

The kids were so excited and came running over. They had another lemonade stand and also donated some of their own money to Reeve for something he needs or wants. They were so happy to give that to him. Peyton, Jacob and Jesse are amazing children with HUGE hearts and we are forever thankful for their act of kindness.

I asked the kids what they thought about us ordering Reeve some special shoes he can put on and take off himself with his brace and they thought that was a great idea.

I contacted someone and they said to send an email here, to Random Acts of Kindness, for suggestions.

— Ashley Cahoon
