The days of sleeping late are over for veteran Winnipeg radio personality Hal Anderson.
It was announced Wednesday that 680 CJOB’s afternoon host will become the man behind the microphone for the station’s morning talk-show slot starting at 10 a.m. on Sept. 27.
“I’m going to be up at 4:30 a.m. or 5 a.m. Today I slept in until 7 a.m. That ends on September 27,” Anderson, a 38-year veteran of the Canadian airwaves, said with a laugh Wednesday morning.
“I’m feeling really good. I can’t not get excited about a new challenge and doing something different. I love this business. I’m really excited about the opportunity.”
Anderson said it’s humbling to follow in the footsteps of some of this city’s radio talk-show royalty.
“It’s really humbling, but I’m excited to do it my way,” he said. “That’s the iconic talk-show time slot on CJOB. When I came to Winnipeg in 1989, that was Peter Warren and later it was Charles Adler. Even then, CJOB was my favourite radio station.”
He noted the last person to fill the morning talk slot was veteran broadcaster Geoff Currier, who announced his departure last month.
“I put my hand up with the encouragement of my wife, Jackie, and said, ‘Hey, that spot’s opened up and I think I’d be good at that.’
“She encouraged me to do it. She’s always on Team Hal,” Anderson, 57, told the Free Press.
“The show will be called Connecting Winnipeg with Hal Anderson. We’ll obviously connect with listeners on the big stories and talk to the newsmakers and offer some opinions.
“I’m going to do it my way with my personality. I think I’m real and genuine. I’m known to cry from time to time. I have a nose for news, too. I hope to bring some compassion, some empathy and some understanding.”
Anderson previously spent five years hosting a morning show at the station but left in 2014 when his contract wasn’t renewed. He returned in 2017 to do weekend mornings and then the afternoon show.
“I feel this (morning talk-show gig) is the cherry on top of my career,” he said.
