ATLIN – A snowmobiler missing since Friday has been found dead as rescue efforts were hampered by “treacherous winter conditions.”

RCMP say the snowmobiler from Whitehorse set out with two others to retrieve a broken down snow machine in the Haines Pass area in northwestern B.C.

Police say the missing snowmobiler was separated from the group and did not have survival gear or a satellite phone.

Searchers faced conditions that included zero visibility, and it wasn’t until a break in the weather on Sunday that rescuers were able to access the area where the man went missing.

Police say a snowmobile group and a helicopter canvassed the area before locating the man.

The man’s body was found about four kilometres from his last known location, and police say the coroner’s service has taken over the investigation.
