Shabbat Time — The fourth commandment states, “Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it Holy.” We’re not Jewish, so what is “Shabbat” and what has it got to do with Unitarian Universalists? Wendell Berry puts it this way: “Sabbath observance invites us to stop. It invites us to rest. It asks us to notice that while we rest the world continues without our help. It invites us to delight in the world’s beauty and abundance.” July 8, 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Cres. For details, call 204-474-1261, email office@uuwinnipeg.mb.ca or visit uuwinnipeg.mb.ca. Service leader: Roger York.

Stories from the Arctic — Church member Lisa Naylor will share what she learned sailing from Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T., to Prince Rupert, B.C., as part of the Canada C3 expedition, which connected Canadians from coast to coast to coast and inspired a deeper understanding of the land, the peoples and the past, present and future of our country. July 15, 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Cres. For details, call 204-474-1261, email office@uuwinnipeg.mb.ca or visit uuwinnipeg.mb.ca.

On Sunday, July 22, at 11:15 a.m., St. Andrews-on-the-Red will be holding its Commemoration of the Dearly Departed service. People are asked to bring their own flowers to be blessed before proceeding to the actual gravesites. If you have a loved one in our cemetery, or know someone who does, please plan on attending this special service. If your loved ones are in another cemetery, you can still remember them at our service. For further information, please call 204-338-7483.

Men’s recovery home dedicated to ‘homeless hero’ Faron Hall’s memory

Faron Hall never got the chance to begin recovery. Once heralded as Winnipeg’s “homeless hero” after twice plunging into the Red River to save strangers from drowning, Hall told St. Boniface Street Links executive director Marion Willis shortly before his death in 2014 that he wanted help for his alcoholism.

Manitoba family finalist for cattle producers environmental award

Aaron Epp 3 minute read Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026

A family in western Manitoba is one of seven finalists for a national environmental award honouring beef cattle producers.

Connor and Kyla English, alongside Connor’s parents, Brian and Leanne English, are nominated for the Canadian Cattle Association’s Environmental Stewardship Award. The 30-year-old award is presented to beef farmers and ranchers who explore innovative ways to protect, preserve and enhance their operations and the environment simultaneously.

This year’s recipient will be announced on Wednesday during a banquet at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference in Winnipeg.

The English family’s roots near Bradwardine — about 265 kilometres west of Winnipeg — date back to 1898. Today, Connor, Kyla, Brian and Leanne manage a herd of about 320 breeding cows on nearly 445 hectares (1,100 acres) of owned and rented pasture and forage land.

Murphy helps Goldeyes battle back to beat Explorers

Max Murphy didn’t hesitate when asked to describe his season so far.

“It’s been terrible,” the veteran Winnipeg Goldeyes outfielder told the Free Press.

Murphy is admittedly critical of himself, the product of a high standard he’s set during a pro baseball career that began in 2014 and has included the past six years with the Fish, where he’s established new franchise records for home runs and RBIs.

So you can imagine the relief felt on Sunday when he looked a lot more like the Murphy of old in leading his team to a 6-2 comeback victory over the Sioux City Explorers to close out a six-game homestand at Blue Cross Park in front of a season-high crowd of 6,825.

Corroded Arlington overpass yields way for new hope of spanning urban chasm

It’s an interesting quirk of timing, perhaps, that the end of two of Winnipeg’s most unlovely features are coming into view in the same few weeks. The rail lines that split the city in half, and the bridge that was built to tie it back together. The original problem, and the solution.

And in the confluence of those two ends, we have an opportunity to dream of what a better Winnipeg can be.

At a news conference on Wednesday, former federal transport minister Lloyd Axworthy laid out a vision for a rail line bypass that would remove more than 120 railway crossings from Winnipeg, route them through Crown and Manitoba Hydro corridor land south of the city, and reclaim 250 acres in the urban core for greenspace and development.

The next step is to focus on how to make it happen. Nothing of this scope comes easy. This new bypass plan emerged from a two-year feasibility study that Premier Wab Kinew had tasked Axworthy with back in 2024. Now, Axworthy will helm a new 90-day feasibility study zooming in on that route specifically.

Foster mom pleads guilty to assault that left six-year-old-girl paralyzed

Dean Pritchard 4 minute read Friday, Aug. 14, 2026

A Winnipeg foster mother has admitted to violently assaulting her ill foster daughter and leaving her paralyzed after the girl resisted the woman’s efforts to provide her with medication, a court has heard.

Marilyn Keno, 26, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of aggravated assault.

Keno remains in custody and will be sentenced at a later date following the completion of a court-ordered pre-sentence report.

The maximum sentence for aggravated assault is 14 years in prison. Crown attorney Alanna Littman and defence lawyer Jeremy Kostiuk did not disclose what sentences they will be recommending.
