LETHBRIDGE – Detectives in a southern Alberta city are probing the death of an 87-year-old man at a care home.
Lethbridge police say they were called last month by Alberta’s chief medical examiner in the death of the man at St. Michael’s Health Centre.
Investigators believe the man got into a fight with another male resident he knew in the same unit and had to be rushed to hospital, where he died.
Police say there is no video surveillance in resident rooms or the common hallways of the facility.
They say the suspect still lives at the care home, but there’s no evidence to suggest an ongoing risk.
St. Michael’s Health Centre is a 202-bed continuing care centre operated by Covenant Health.
A spokesperson for the health-care provider said it was “deeply saddened” by the death.
“We offer our sympathy and support to the resident’s family and friends,” Janet Laurie said in a statement. “There is nothing more important than the safety and care of the residents who call Covenant and St. Michael’s home.”
