WINNIPEG – Here are some of the key promises contained in the Manitoba speech from the throne:
— a new highway overpass near Carberry, where a 2023 crash killed 17 people.
— a ban that will forbid employers from requiring sick notes for absences of less than a week.
— a ban on machetes in some public places including parks, and further restrictions on online sales.
— a third turbine, in addition to two already proposed, for new energy generation in the Brandon area.
— a supervised consumption site in Winnipeg, west of a previously proposed site that was opposed by area residents.
— A ban on mandatory overtime for some nurses, and a requirement for health-care managers to follow staff-to-patient ratios.
— A charter of patient rights in health care, and a new online portal for patients to access lab results.
— A study that will look for ways to keep grocery prices affordable, with action to follow in the spring budget.
— A bridge in Lac du Bonnet will be renamed in honour of Sue and Richard Nowell, who died in a wildfire this year.
