Feeding hope’s flame: Sisters support annual ovarian cancer event on mom’s behalf

When Christa Slatnik and Cindy Sanchez lost their mother to ovarian cancer in 2000, it was devastating.

But when the twin sisters got the opportunity to volunteer for Winnipeg’s first-ever Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope in 2004, it allowed them to honour their mother and continue her legacy.

“Although losing her was the hardest thing we’ve ever gone through, especially when we were only 23 years old, to try to take such a negative thing and turn it around and help other people makes her loss feel like it’s improving the world by increasing awareness,” said Slatnik.

The walk of hope on Sept. 27 will mark 22 years of the sisters volunteering with Ovarian Cancer Canada to bring the walk of hope to Winnipeg.

REGINA – Leave it to Brady Oliveira to succinctly describe that fine line between jubilation and the alternate.

In the aftermath of another Labour Day Classic that went down to the wire, Oliveira went through the joy of tying the game with no time left on the clock to the empty feeling that came moments later when the Saskatchewan Roughriders finished off a 32-26 victory on Sunday night before a raucous crowd of 34,352 at Mosaic Stadium.

“It’s terrible,” said Oliveira. “You just kind of feel all of the emotions. I’m pretty pissed right now. We were close, we were right there. We didn’t play our best football and we still gave ourselves a chance, which could be a silver lining.

“I don’t like to look at silver linings because the fact of the matter is we play this game to get positive results. We want to win the game and we didn’t win the game. So, I’m pissed.”

Bombers close but not good enough

REGINA — The stage was set for the type of season-altering moment that can lift a franchise in a way that is tough to fully quantify, yet easy to identify.

A six-play, 66-yard drive during the final 39 seconds of regulation time was capped by Zach Collaros finding Dorian Singer in the corner of the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown strike with no time left on the clock, momentarily silencing the largest crowd to witness a football game inside Mosaic Stadium on Sunday night in the 61st edition of the Labour Day Classic.

But the converted major had only helped the Winnipeg Blue Bombers tie the contest to force overtime.

Eight plays and a penalty for a time-clock violation later, the Blue Bombers were left to lament what might have been in what became a 32-26 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

NDP minister needs lesson in political civility

Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine’s decision to intercede in Winnipeg’s mayoral election may be surprising to some political observers. To others, however, it is entirely on brand.

On Tuesday, Fontaine posted a video on social media in which she expressed concern that former city councillor and Progressive Conservative cabinet minister Kevin Klein was entering the race to challenge incumbent Mayor Scott Gillingham.

The caption on the video was blunt: “I mean, really, who chooses to work for Count Dracula?”

“Kevin Klein once worked for Peter Nygard. Peter Nygard is Canada’s equivalent to (American sex offender) Jeffrey Epstein — had his own little island, did unspeakable, disgusting things to women and girls … anyways, I just thought that Winnipeggers would want to know that Kevin Klein, at one point, worked for Peter Nygard,” she says in the video.
