MOON ALERT We have the All Clear today to shop and make important decisions except for a window from 12:15 p.m. until 1 p.m. After that, the moon moves from Scorpio into Sagittarius.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is an extremely powerful day for you because the sun is in your sign and the sun loves to be in Aries. Today, not only do you feel energized, you feel fortunate. Even though you’re working hard now, others are supportive to you.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Continue to keep a low profile because this is a good time to contemplate and meditate upon your new year (birthday to birthday) which is about to begin. What do you want for yourself in 2009-10?.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Others are beneficial to you now. Enjoy the company of friends and groups. Talk to people about your hopes and dreams for the future because their feedback will help you. What they say might tweak your plans.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Because people notice you more than usual and because those in power seem to see you in your best light (they’re impressed, let’s face it.) Why not milk this for all it’s worth? Demand the advantage! Go after what you want.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Indulge your desire to travel somewhere. You might not travel right now, but you can make plans to do so in the future. You need to get away and broaden your horizons. You want to grab life by the throat and make things happen. You want adventure and you want to learn something new. Yeah!

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a good time to settle matters about shared property, shared debt and anything that’s jointly owned. You can also clean up loose details about insurance matters, inheritances, taxes, estates and debt. Meanwhile, back in the bedroom, discussions about sex are frank. (Who’s Frank?)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Get more sleep. Because the sun is as far away from your sign is it gets all year, you’re more tired than usual. (The sun is our source of energy.) Just do what you have to do, and respect your need for more rest and relaxation.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

One of the reasons you’re accomplishing a lot right now is because you’re motivated to do so. You want a home for everything and everything in its place. Don’t worry, you’re not being anal. You’re just being industrious!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is your month to play! Sneak away on a vacation if you can. Enjoy playful times with children. Enjoy the arts. Sporting events and anything to do with the entertainment world and the hospitality industry will delight you. Romance and love affairs are promising. Oo la la!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Home, family and real estate matters are your primary concern now. Discussions with a parent could be significant. You’re very involved with domestic plans or possibly a family business.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a busy time for you. Short trips, errands, increased reading and writing, plus conversations with everyone keep you breathlessly on the run! This is not a time to sit at home. Get out and hustle thy buns. New faces are exciting and interesting to meet. (New bodies are interesting too.)

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You’re gung-ho about moneymaking ideas and clever schemes to improve your cash flow. You’re excited about increasing opportunities to make a name for yourself and get out there in the big, wide world.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Native American leader (started AIM, and the Sacred Run) Dennis Bank (1932) shares your birthday. You’re socially aware, and tuned in to what’s going on around you. You’re intelligent and well spoken. This combination allows you to make a difference in the lives of others. You’re skilled at dealing with groups because you’re a fine teacher. This year something you’ve been involved with for nine years will diminish or end.

Mayoral contenders focus on recreation funding, 911, littered streets

Malak Abas 4 minute read 5:03 PM CDT

Community centre funding, 911 and 311 services, and clamping down on litterbugs dominated the mayoral election campaign Friday, while a fourth candidate said voters would have to stay tuned for his promises.

Incumbent Scott Gillingham promised to work with the federal and provincial governments to set up a $60-million fund for community centres, that would be split three ways.

“We’ve seen again and again that when the city steps up with a serious plan and a financial commitment and puts real money on the table, other governments are willing to come to the table, too,” he said.

The fund would pay for repairs and upgrades at community centres and recreation facilities.

Lone Manitoba 9/11 victim's legacy lives on helping Inuit students become nurses

Melissa Martin 13 minute read Yesterday at 5:24 PM CDT

On the night before the morning that everyone remembers, Ellen Judd spoke to her partner, Christine Egan, several times on the phone. Egan was in New York, where she’d gone to look after her nephews so her beloved brother, Michael, and his wife, Anna, could treat themselves to an anniversary vacation.

Usually, Judd would have been there, too. The couple had been together for more than 15 years, and loved sharing all the good parts of life. But at the time, she was an anthropology professor at the University of Manitoba, and the school year was just starting; she had classes the next day. Staying connected by phone would have to suffice.

In their calls that night, Judd remembers, Egan was happy. Christmas was the main topic. They were planning to spend the holiday with Judd’s family in Ontario, and talked about when to book flights. Egan was looking forward to that visit; Judd’s family “loved her to bits,” the now-retired professor says, and the affection was mutual.

The next day, Egan said, she planned to go into Manhattan with Michael. He was an executive at Aon, a global risk, retirement and health services corporation, and had an office on the 105th floor of the World Trade Centre’s South Tower.

Pokemon thieves clear out collectibles shop

Scott Billeck 5 minute read 4:47 PM CDT

Terri Settle loved watching children walk into her collectibles shop to hunt for their favourite Pokemon cards.

After the latest break in stripped her shelves of much of the inventory, she’s not sure she’ll get to see it again.

Thieves broke into Terri’s Trinkets and Toys on Tuesday evening, punching through a grate and then the store’s bathroom wall to reach the storefront.

They made off with about $6,000 worth of merchandise, including all of the store’s Pokemon cards — about 7,000 of them — along with toys, Lego, jewelry, video games, a debit machine and personal laptop. They even took her vacuum cleaner.

AI poses threat to Indigenous culture, knowledge, creativity

Niigaan Sinclair 5 minute read 5:23 PM CDT

It’s the beginning of the school year and the now-annual conversation every teacher and professor has to have with students about the ethics of using artificial intelligence.

It used to be that computers were a tool primarily used to express an individual’s creativity, critical thought and support their research.

Nowadays, and especially since the invention of the internet, computers come with AI programs that instantly summarize vast amounts of data, create content and images, and even write 10-page essays based on information found on sites from across the world.

This is why AI, whether people like it or not, is basically theft – or the action of using someone else’s ideas and creations without the consent of the original creator.
