WINNIPEG’S four teams in the 2009 BDO Classic Canadian Open are off and running at the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event at MTS Centre, with $100,000 up for grabs.
After this afternoon’s third draw, former world champions Kerry Burtnyk and Jeff Stoughton both were unbeaten at 2-0 while young gunners Mike McEwen and Reid Carruthers both improve to 1-1.
Stoughton beat Saskatchewan’s Pat Simmons 8-5 and Burtnyk edged Wayne Middaugh 6-5 on the third draw to remain unbeaten while McEwen, who lost a close one to Burtnyk Wednesday night, clobbered Quebec’s Jean-Michel Menard 9-4 to move to 1-1.
Also evening his record at 1-1 was Carruthers, who upset favoured Kevin Koe of Edmonton 6-5 in this morning’s draw to move to 1-1. The top eight of the 18 teams competing in the five-game round-robin advance to Saturday’s playoff round.
In the fourth draw this evening, McEwen was taking on former world champion Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., while Carruthers was playing Saskatchewan’s Joel Jordison.
Burtnyk plays American Pete Fenson in tonight’s fifth draw while Stoughton takes on Edmonton multi-world champion Randy Ferbey, with $25,000 going to the winning team of Sunday’s 1 p.m. final (CBC-TV).
Also at 2-0 with Stoughton and Burtnyk heading into the fourth draw are defending world champ Kevin Martin and 2006 Olympic gold medallist Brad Gushue.
