NEEPAWA — Former Manitoba champion Barb Spencer gave up seven points on four consecutive ends after leading 6-3, losing 10-6 tonight to unheralded Lisa Blixhavn of Brandon at the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
It was the first loss of the provincial championship for the top-seeded Spencer, who was last year’s losing Scotties finalist to Jennifer Jones in Gimli. Spencer missed badly on her final shot, a takeout for two and the win, leaving Blixhavn three.
The result tightens up the standings in the black group, leaving Spencer at 3-1 and back of young teams Chelsea Carey of Morden and Holly Scott of Fort Rouge, both at 4-0, out in front.
Tied with Spencer at 3-1 is East St. Paul’s Kim Link, who beat winless Linda Stewart of Bowsman 9-7 tonight. Blixhavn improves to 2-2 with her victory and still in contention for a playoff spot.
Earlier today in the red group, No. 2 seed Kristy Jenion of Fort Rouge clobbered La Salle’s Chris Scalena 9-4 and No. 3 Janet Harvey of Assiniboine Memorial crunched Terry Ursel of Plumas 11-6. No. 7 seed Maureen Bonar of Brandon beat Springfield’s Karen Rosser 10-4.
Jenion and Harvey both improved to 3-0 and Bonar was at 2-1 heading into tonight’s 7:45 p.m. draw, while Scalena and Rosser remain winless and Ursel fell to 1-2.
In a game that got much closer in the end, No. 6 Karen Porritt improved to 3-0 with a 9-7 win over Brandon’s winless Tina Kozak.
The top two teams in each pool at the end of round-robin play Saturday morning advance to the playoffs, with Sunday’s champion earning a spot in the national Scotties championship in Victoria Feb. 21-March 1.
