Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 06/02/2009 (6316 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
NEEPAWA – Morden’s’ Chelsea Carey continued her winning streak at the 2009 Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts while veteran Barb Spencer knocked another young team from the ranks of the undefeated.
Carey defeated East St. Paul’s Kim Link 6-2 in a tight game to improve to 5-0, alone at the top of her pool, while Spencer handed Holly Scott of Fort Rouge her first loss of the round-robin, 8-5, to leave both those teams at 4-1.
Carey, 24, says it’s nice to be atop her pool. But with a game against No. 1 seeded Spencer tonight and her round-robin finale vs. the strong Scott team tomorrow morning, there’s no time for rest now.
“We’re in better position than everybody else, yeah, but the problem with where we’re at now is if we lose our last two games we could very easily not even get a tiebreaker because we play Barb and Holly,” Carey said.
“If we were to lose those two games, they’d both be 6-1 and we’d be 5-2 and we don’t get even a tiebreaker,” said the 2009 Manitoba Curling Tour women’s champion. “So we’re so far being home-free, it’s not even funny.
“We win tonight, we guarantee ourselves a tiebreaker, we’re still not guaranteed anything as far as placement. It’s great that we put ourselves in that position but there’s certainly no relief at all yet because we still have so much to work to do.”
Link and Brandon’s Lisa Blixhavn are still mathematically alive with 3-2 records, but they need to win out. Spencer plays Carey tonight and Link tomorrow while Scott plays Link tonight and Carey tomorrow.
Earlier today, Karen Porritt stole five points to beat three-time champion Janet Harvey 7-2 and Kristy Jenion edged Brandon’s Maureen Bonar 5-4 in an extra end, leaving both Porritt and Jenion at 5-0 heading into this afternoon’s draw in the red group.
It was Harvey’s first loss. In critical games on the 4 p.m. draw, Jenion takes on Harvey while Porritt goes up against Bonar, who at 2-3 is out of playoff contention. The top two teams in each pool advance to tomorrow night’s Page playoffs.
“That was huge,” Jenion said. “After seeing Janet (Harvey) had lost, we had to maintain the advantage. We’re not even remotely safe at this point. We’re aiming to go 7-0 here, we’re not planning on dropping a game.”
The winner of Sunday’s final earns a spot in the national Scotties championship in Victoria Feb. 21-March 1.
