Stay off the roads. That’s the warning from police as they try to cope with rain that has made Manitoba roads as slick as skating rinks.
The Perimeter Highway has been closed in places.
Inkster Blvd., between Sturgeon Road and the Permieter, was closed about 8 a.m. There are about 30 trucks lined up along the road unable to move.
Highway 100, the south Perimeter at McGillivray Blvd., is closed for northbound traffic where a fire truck has gone in the ditch.
Highway 1 west from Virden to Winnipeg, Highway 16 from Highway 1 to Newdale, and Highway 10 from Brandon to Dauphin are re-opened. Highway 75 from the U.S. border to Winnipeg has also been reopened. The province is advising drivers to use extreme caution.
Freezing rain is causing widespread highway closures, school cancellations and interruptions of other services in Winnipeg and throughout the province this morning.
A spokeswoman at the Greyhound bus terminal in Winnipeg said no inter-city buses are arriving or departing because of the weather.
The Free Press is also receiving notices of weather-related school cancellations from most Winnipeg and rural school divisions.
The city is reporting crews have salted all major streets in Winnipeg and are working this morning on collector streets and other bus routes.
A spokeswoman for the city said public works officials will be watching the weather throughout the day and could proceed to begin sanding sidewalks later.
The relatively high tempretaures have also revealed many potholes – and calls about them to city departments, the spokeswoman said. Normally, pothole sightings are frequent as spring approaches.
