Periods of icy rain are expected to continue throughout Manitoba today.

The high is expected to reach three today, with wind from the southeast at 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h.

Up to 10 mm of rain is expected to fall overnight, with temperatures steady near plus two.

Tuesday will see periods of rain mixed with a few flurries in the afternoon, with the temperature steady near plus one.

It will get cooler on Wednesday, with temperatures of -6 and a 30 per cent chance of flurries. Thursday is expected to fall to -13, and Friday will be -18.

Environment Canada has predicted levels of rain for today that have been seen only seven times in the last 136 years.

Environment Canada meteorologist Mike Russo said Manitobans should be cautious of treacherous sidewalks and slick roads caused by up to 10 to 15 millimetres of rainfall today.

"It’s pretty rare we see rain in the month of February," he said, referring to the seven times since 1873 there have been more than five mm of rainfall on a single day in February. Russo said rainfall will likely start as freezing rain in southwestern Manitoba early this morning and then travel up towards Winnipeg, then further north.

The warm air mass is being pushed into Manitoba from the Gulf Of Mexico, said Russo.

By late this evening, Environment Canada predicts a second, heavier rainfall will begin again and colder temperatures in some regions on Manitoba’s western edge such as Virden and Swan River will mean snow, snow and more snow.

"They will also receive the freezing rain as it passes through, but when the second belt of precipitation comes through, it will more than likely be rain changing over to snow," he said, adding by Tuesday there could be 10 centimetres of snow.
