If you can’t beat him, trade for him.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are expected to announce Monday they have traded a late-round draft pick in 2011 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for three-year veteran cornerback James Johnson,
The Free Press has learned. Johnson, Bomber fans will undoubtedly painfully recall, was the MVP of the Riders Grey Cup win over Winnipeg as he picked off three Ryan Dinwiddie passes — returning one for a touchdown.
Johnson (5-8, 185, Arkansas State) apparently wasn’t viewed as a starter in the Rider secondary any more even though he finished second on the team a year ago with three interceptions. A big part of their decision to move him may have been the $10,000 bonus Johnson was due today and the fact the deal clears about $80,000 (his rumoured salary) off the Riders’ cap total.
Meanwhile, a CFL source said today it’s ‘99 per cent’ certain that Bomber left tackle Alexandre Gauthier will be signing with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats not long after the opening of the free-agent market at 11:01 p.m. CT.
