SELKIRK — Third-seed Mike McEwen won handily here at the 2009 Manitoba Men’s Provincial Curling Championship this afternoon, drilling Burntwood’s Farrol Asham 7-2 this afternoon.
“There was a couple of nerve-wracking moments,” McEwen said afterward, “but for the most part, it was a pretty simple game. It was nice to get a feel for the ice.”
In other games this afternoon, 2008 provincial men’s runner-up David Bohn beat Manitou’s Steve Pauls 7-3, West Kildonan’s Doug Riach defeated Hamiota’s Kelly Skinner 4-3, Rosser’s Chris Galbraith beat Swan River’s Brent Scales 10-8 and Deer Lodge’s Peter Nicholls beat West St. Paul’s Rob Cosens 8-5.
The next draw takes to the ice at the Selkirk Recreation Centre at 4 p.m., when top seed Kerry Burtnyk makes his 2009 provincials debut.
Earlier today, former world champion Jeff Stoughton was a winner on the opening draw, drilling Riverton’s Shawn Magnusson 9-1.
In other morning games, Rorketon’s Murray Woodward defeated Granite’s Bob Sigurdson 6-5 in an extra end, Petersfield’s Dave Boehmer defeated Portage’s Ryan Hyde 6-5, West Kildonan’s Brendan Taylor defeated Pembina’s Scott Madams 8-2 and St. Vital’s Darryl Friesen stole three in the second end en route to a 10-1 five end pounding of Brandon’s Allan Lyburn.
