As expected, Burtnyk and Stoughton advance to playoffs

SELKIRK -- Top seeds Kerry Burtnyk and Jeff Stoughton are through to the playoff round at the 2009 Safeway Manitoba Men’s Curling Championship but No. 3 seed Mike McEwen ran into a roadblock this morning.

SELKIRK — Top seeds Kerry Burtnyk and Jeff Stoughton are through to the playoff round at the 2009 Safeway Manitoba Men’s Curling Championship but No. 3 seed Mike McEwen ran into a roadblock this morning.

Top seed Burtnyk edged Daley Peters 7-5 while Stoughton, the No. 2 seed, doubled Petersfield’s Dave Boehmer 8-4 and both will advance to tonight’s preliminary playoff round at the Selkirk Recreation Centre.

But McEwen, the No. 3 seed, fell 7-6 in an extra end to No. 11 seed Brendan Taylor of West Kildonan to drop to the B side while Taylor advanced with Burtnyk, Stoughton and Peter Nicholls of Deer Lodge.

Nicholls blasted Reid Carruthers of West Kildonan 9-3 on the morning draw.

In B-side semifinals this afternoon, Hamiota’s Kelly Skinner hung a six-ender on West Kildonan’s Doug Riach for a 9-1 blowout, La Salle’s Randy Neufeld beat Rosser’s Chris Galbraith 9-6, Brandon’s William Lyburn defeated Neepawa’s Kelly Robertson 9-5 and Bob Sigurdson needed an extra end to dispatch Allan Lyburn of Brandon 6-5.

Next up are the 4 p.m. B-side finals, where McEwen will take on Skinner, Carruthers plays Neufeld, Peters goes up against William Lyburn and Sigurdson faces Boehmer. The winners qualify for the playoffs and the losers are out.

Tonight, Burtnyk will play the winner of the Neufeld-Carruthers game, Stoughton will be upagainst the victor in the McEwen-Skinner match, Taylor will take on the Boehmer-Sigurdson winner and Nicholls gets the Lyburn-Peters winner.

What started as a 32-team competition has now been whittled down to 12. Sunday’s Safeway Championship winner will represent Manitoba at the Tim Hortons Brier in Calgary next month.
