SELKIRK — FOUR of the top five seeds have made it to the championship round of the 2009 Safeway Men’s Provincial Curling Championship with victories this afternoon by Kerry Burtnyk and Mike McEwen.

Burtnyk, the defending champion and No. 1 seed who lost his first game last night to Reid Carruthers, bounced back today with victories this morning over Daley Peters (9-7) and this afternoon, 10-3 over Brendan Taylor to advance to the final four.

He grabbed one of the two remaining championship round berths along with McEwen, the No. 3 seed, who continued to gain momentum with a 6-3 win over No. 4 Peter Nicholls this afternoon after beating Bob Sigurdson 7-4 this morning.

Burtnyk and McEwen will meet in tonight’s 7 p.m. 3 vs. 4 Page playoff game, with the winner advancing to Sunday’s 9:30 a.m. semifinal and the loser going home. Nicholls and Taylor, after two losses today, are eliminated.

Earlier today, No. 2 seed Jeff Stoughton and fifth seed Carruthers both won and will face each other in the 1 vs. 1 Page game at 7 tonight. Stoughton is the only undefeated team left while Carruthers has caught fire after emerging from the B side.

The winner of the Stoughton-Carruthers game tonight will go directly to Sunday’s 2 p.m. final while the loser will play either McEwen or Burtnyk in the semifinal.

The Manitoba champion will represent the province next month at the Tim Hortons Brier in Calgary
