Winnipeg firefighters rescued a dog and several puppies early this afternoon from a house fire at 368 Alfred Avenue, between Salter and Main streets.

The dogs, suffering from smoke inhalation, are being sent to a veterinarian for treatment.

All people escaped from the burning building. Two people at the scene were also treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire appeared to have started in the basement of the two-storey building.
