CALGARY — Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton kicked off his Manitoba record seventh Brier here this afternoon with an emphatic win, dropping Nova Scotia’s Mark Dacey 8-3.

Stoughton was already leading 3-1 when he stole two off the 2004 Brier champion in the fifth end, carrying a 5-1 lead into the break and coasting the rest of the way on the first draw of the 2009 Brier.

Dacey said he had to tip his hat to the play of Stoughton. “We got some ends going, but just couldn’t maintain it,” said Dacey.

Manitoba lead Steve Gould said he likes that his squad comes into this Brier as a bit of an underdog in an event where most people are expecting Alberta and Ontario to dominate.

“It’s the end of the week when you want people to be talking about you,” said Gould.

In other games on the opening draw, Alberta’s Kevin Martin jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first end and then never looked back, beating New Brunswick’s Russ Howard 7-4; PEI’s Rod MacDonald thumped NWT/Yukon’s Jamie Koe 8-2; and Quebec’s Jean-Michel Menard defeated Saskatchewan’s Joel Jordison 7-5.

Stoughton returns to the ice here this evening when he’ll take on NWT/Yukon.
