The Kevin Glenn era in Winnipeg is now officially over.
The Blue Bombers announced this afternoon that Glenn, their starting quarterback for the past 4½ years, has been officially released by the club.
Glenn was due a $50,000 payment this coming weekend. After not agreeing to rework his contract with the Bombers and after attempts to trade him elsewhere in the league failed, he was cut adrift.
Glenn, 29, is now free to negotiate a deal with any CFL club as a free agent.
The Illinois State product arrived in Winnipeg via trade in 2004 to serve as the back-up to Khari Jones but by 2005 he was the club’s starter.
His best season as a Bomber came in 2007 when he threw for over 5,000 yards and 25 touchdowns en route to being named the East Division all-star quarterback and Most Outstanding Player nominee.
Unfortunately, Glenn broke his arm late in the Bombers East Final win over the Toronto Argonauts and did not dress in the team’s Grey Cup loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Glenn lost his starting job last summer as the whole offence struggled but returned and, calling his own plays, managed to help salvage the season and guide the team into a second-place finish.
He did throw a career-high 20 interceptions, however, and when new head coach Mike Kelly came aboard he indicated he thought Glenn needed a ‘change of scenery’ after acquiring Stefan Lefors from the Edmonton Eskimos as the No. 1 QB.
