Storm causes problems for Hydro, Shaw

Manitoba Hydro turned power off to Headingley and parts of St. James earlier this morning and Shaw Communications is also experiencing widespread problems as a result of the Colorado low that has blasted southern Manitoba.

Power was turned off from about 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m on Wednesday to clear ice-coated lines, Hydro spokesman Glenn Schneider said.

Hydro has been receiving complaints throughout the day related to branches falling on smaller local power lines serving a few blocks — there have been no large outages, Schneider said.

“We took an outage in the west part, in Headingley and in the west part of St. James,” he said. “We did that to roll some ice that accumulated on the lines.

“The lines get coated in ice. they really get whipping around. We call it galloping — they can tear off the connectors.”

Schneider said that the utility can create a short circuit to heat the lines, or crews in a truck can ride underneath the lines, breaking off the ice with long poles.

And as of 3 p.m., Shaw was reporting customers in Charleswood, North Kildonan, St. James and St. Andrews may be having cable, Internet, and digital telephone problems.
