The Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame is no longer the exclusive domain of men.
Winnipeg’s Jill Mathez, a longtime women’s hockey player and coach, will be the first woman to be inducted into the Manitoba hall, officials announced Tuesday morning.
Mathez was a top female player and former MVP of the Winnipeg Women’s Hockey League. She has since gone on to a lengthy career as a women’s hockey coach at the midget, senior and college levels.
“When I began as a player,” Mathez said in an interview Tuesday morning, “girls didn’t play hockey. It’s thanks to the support of my family, who were determined to find me a place to play, that I got to play at all.
“This is quite an honour.”
Provincial hockey hall officials announced Mathez’s induction at a news conference Tuesday morning held to unveil the hall’s class of 2009.
Mathez is being inducted as a builder — one of six builders, four teams and seven players who will be formally inducted at a dinner Oct. 3.
Other 2009 inductees included NHL goaltenders Ed Belfour and Ken Wregget and Bill Lesuk, who played 318 games in the defunct World Hockey Association, all of them as a member of the Winnipeg Jets.
