WINNIPEG–Kirby  Schepp knows timing is everything in basketball.

Schepp was officially introduced today as the new Bisons men’s basketball head coach, replacing Rick Suffield, who held the position for 25 years.

The 34-year-old Winnipegger gets the job at the right time in his coaching career, but at the wrong time of the season.

MICHAEL CHRISTIANSON/WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Kirby Schepp was officially introduced today as the new Bisons men’s basketball head coach.

Schepp will work his last day Thursday at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, where he’s been the Huskies’ coach for the past 14 years and a teacher for the past eight.

He’ll move into his U of M office on Friday and the first order of business will be to recruit some young talent coming out of high school for the 2009-2010 season.

Schepp and his Huskies competed in the 2009 Milk Provincial AAAA Basketball Championship final game on March 21 at the U of M — prime time for recruiting — but he wasn’t the Bisons’ coach yet.

“This is a huge, huge opportunity that doesn’t come around too often and it’s an honour for me to take it,” said Schepp, who played for the University of Winnipeg Wesmen from 1993-96.

“I am so far behind, recruiting-wise. But you’ve got to move on, look at your contacts around the country and see what’s out there, and we’ve got to build on what we’ve had from previous years.”

Since his hiring has come so long after the local high school basketball season ended, Schepp said the Bisons have missed out on “the strongest recruiting class in at least the last 10 or 12 years.

“We’re talking to a number of kids, but the top kids coming out this year are gone, and were gone, at least in their minds, a long time ago,” Schepp said. “There’s maybe one or two that you’d say were in the top 10 players that are uncommitted to this point.”
