The Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue to lock up proven talent and sign new blood with training camp scheduled to open in less than two weeks.
The team announced Tuesday they have extended the contracts of linebacker Siddeeq Shabazz and receiver Adarius Bowman, both CFL vets, and signed defensive lineman Chase Ortiz and defensive back Jasper Johnson to new deals. The two newcomers are expected on the field for next week’s rookie camp with main camp scheduled to begin on Sunday, June 7.
Shabazz (6-0, 205, New Mexico State) was acquired in the February trade that sent Kai Ellis to the Edmonton Eskimos. The 28-year-old started all 18 games for the Esks last year, his second season, and was second on the team in defensive tackles with 63 while adding four tackles for losses, three sacks and an interception. He is penciled in to replace Cam Hall at one outside linebacker spot.
Bowman (6-4, 219, Oklahoma State) was part of the three-team trade that sent Dan Goodspeed first to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and then to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Just 23, Bowman started nine games for the Riders last year before being injured and finished with 23 receptions for 358 yards and three TDs.
Ortiz (6-3, 247, Texas Christian) led the Mountain West Conference with nine sacks and was named first-team All-MWC in 2005 and was also named All-MWC as a junior a year later.
Johnson (6-2, 218, Central Arkansas) had a brief tryout with the Dallas Cowboys in 2007.
