Bombers kick off second week of training camp with a trade

Winnipeg Blue Bomber training camp is into its second week and, as is the norm for the new Mike Kelly regime, it kicked off with a trade and will feature a first real look at the squad in game action. The Bombers made official the trade we told you about Sunday night on The Bomber Insider blog (winnipegfreepress.com) that sends cornerback Willie Amos to the Edmonton Eskimos in exchange for massive import offensive lineman Thaddeus Coleman. Amos, the former Nebraska star, appeared in 11 games for the Bombers last year but had hardly been on the field during training camp after suffering an injury. In Coleman (6-8, 310, Mississippi Valley State) the Bombers get a player who can play both right and left tackle and was first spied by Kelly last year when he was the Eskimo receiver coach and the prospect arrived after try outs in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets. Coleman will likely push import tackle Glen January for work along the Bomber O-line where the plan, at least for now, is to start four Canadians and one American. The Bombers, meanwhile, return to the field this afternoon at 4 p.m. and will continue preparations for Wednesday’s preseason game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Canad Inns Stadium at 7 p.m. Winnipeg is in Montreal next week for its final exhibition game before opening the regular season July 2nd in Edmonton. That game will be like ‘old home week’ for the Bombers and Esks after a number of players/coaches have changed colours. Joining Kelly on the Bomber staff is Rick Campbell, the long-time Eskimo assistant and son of Edmonton icon Hugh Campbell, while the Winnipeg roster also features Fred Perry, Siddeeq Shabazz, Brock Ralph, Stefan LeFors, Keyuo Craver, Montez Murphy and now Coleman.
