Mother in child-custody case arrested on fraud charges

WINNIPEG – The mother involved in a high-profile CFS custody battle was arrested yesterday on five charges related to credit card fraud.

The woman, who cannot be named, faces one count of theft from mail, two counts of personation to gain advantage, and two counts of possession – use credit card data.

Lawyer Mike Cook said police arrested her last night in Winnipeg. he woman spent the night in the Remand Centre, he said. Cook said an outstanding warrant had been issued in her name.

He said his client was doing "quite well" and wanted to testify in the custody trial.

She attended court this afternoon to listen to the hearing. She was still in custody and was in chains.

Court earlier heard the woman’s mother testify that her daughter had signed up for a credit card in her name without her permission.

Winnipeg police said yesterday that the woman has been under investigation for some time. The alleged offences took place between December 2008 and February 2009.

In total, she is alleged to have spent $23,000 on a credit card she falsely obtained.

Manitoba Child and Family Services is seeking a permanent order of guardianship of the woman’s two children. CFS seized the children last spring after the girl arrived at school with white supremacist markings on her body.
