WINNIPEG — Winnipeg’s most public square will debut its facelift this weekend with a full agenda of bands playing free concerts today, Saturday and Sunday.
Old Market Square has been extensively renovated over the past nine months with low, flowing cement walls now hemming in the grass square. The nine-month renovation was conducted by private contractors, co-ordinated by the Exchange District Business Improvement Zone and partly financed by downtown development agency CentreVenture.
It is the first phase of a $3.3-million upgrade.
The 20th Jazz Winnipeg Festival’s closing weekend kicks off today at the freshly-landscaped square.
The free performances at the park in the Exchange District get started at 6 p.m. tonight with Trio Bembe’s rhythms of Cuba and Brazil.
Tomorrow, the free stage opens at 2 p.m. with Ministers of Cool.
On Sunday, Groovy Moustache kicks things off at 2 p.m. for the final day of the festival.
The 2009 Groove-FM Jazz Winnipeg Festival, which ends Sunday, features over 100 performances on over a dozen stages.
