Police have arrested a second man in connection to the murder of Amber McFarland.
An RCMP spokesman confirmed a 39-year-old man was arrested today but refused to answer questions if the 40-year-old man arrested Wednesday has been charged.
The arrests come eight months after McFarland went missing from a Portage la Prairie.The woman’s ex-boyfriend, Kelly Garrioch, the other man on the video, said the arrest is "ridiculous" and part of a police plan to pressure the two men last seen with her.
An RCMP spokesman confirmed Wednesday a Portage la Prairie man was arrested by officers and held for questioning. He did not say if the man was charged.
A search warrant has also been executed on the man’s Portage la Prairie residence, Cpl. Bob Hodyr added. He did not comment on whether McFarland’s body has been found.
She has been missing since October 18, 2008.
Police released surveillance footage of McFarland at a hotel beer vendor, where she was laughing with the two men. Their faces were blurred by police.
A relative and a friend of McFarland’s said that during their search for her, they were told McFarland went to her ex-boyfriend’s home after the hotel.
In June, police searched the backyard of Garrioch’s former home. They also announced her death was being treated as a homicide.
Now, police have arrested the other man seen with her in the hotel’s surveillance footage.
"My first impression is that it’s another public tactic… They’ve got to be making it look like they’re making some progress in the public eye," Garrioch said.
"We’re at the point this is getting ridiculous."
He said his life has been "turned upside down" since McFarland’s disappearance and that the police should consider "exploring other avenues."
He said it’s impossible to prove he and McFarland parted while she was still alive because he doesn’t videotape his every move.
"(The hotel) was the last public place maybe that she was seen. What other places have they checked?"
McFarland’s twin sister, Ashley Hewins, said the arrest does not mean the end of her family’s ordeal.
"I am not getting myself too worked up over it," she said.
"Just because this has happened, (it) doesn’t mean it’s the conclusion."
