WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Moose hockey club has been named the winner of the American Hockey League’s President’s Award for the 2008-2009 season, an award which recognizes excellence in all areas off the ice in the past year.
The Manitoba team, which finished first overall in the AHL for the first time in team history and appeared in its first Calder Cup final series, set franchise records for most wins in a regular season (50), most road wins (25), and tied the franchise mark for the most home wins in one season (25).
The Moose also was second in the AHL in regular-season attendance and led the league in the playoffs with an average of 10,554 spectators. Top crowds included two sell-outs of 15,003 during the Calder Cup final series against the Hershey Bears and 18 lower-bowl sellouts throughout the entire season.
The Moose also hosted the largest crowd for any Game 1 of the Calder Cup Finals in the AHL’s 73-year history. Those 15,003 fans were also the seventh-largest crowd in AHL playoff history, and the sixth-largest for a Finals game.
Additionally, the Moose maintained a solid presence in the Winnipeg community and made numerous best-practices contributions to the AHL’s Team Business Services program over the course of the year.
Members of the Moose participated in numerous community events throughout the season including schools visits for the "Respond to Reading" program, a visit to the Children’s Hospital in December to meet young patients as the team donated over $5,000 to the hospital.
Some members of the club participated in the Home Depot Backyard Rink promotion where the players went to a local backyard rink to play shinny with 20 local minor hockey players. The team also ran a community jersey program throughout the season for all minor hockey clubs to participate in. Southdale Community Centre earned first place honors, allowing them to host the first-ever Manitoba Moose Pancake Breakfast along with seeing their jersey worn in an AHL game. Dakota Community Centre, who came in second, hosted the Moose for an outdoor practice at their facility.
