Two-man race at Manitoba golf championship

It’s down to a two-man race at the Manitoba Mid-Amateur Championship at Southwood Golf and Country Club.

Tyler Mancini of Pine Ridge maintained the lead he held for the first two days, making birdies at the 13th and 14th holes to rally for a round of two-over 72. At 214, four-over for three rounds, he leads Breezy Bend’s Garth Collings by two shots heading for Thursday’s final round.

Niakwa’s Terry James, who shot 72 today, is seven strokes behind the leader.

Mancini, who had a chance to win last week’s Manitoba Amateur Championship at Elmhurst before fading to fifth, was five over after six holes today and his five-shot lead on Collings had disappeared. Mancini put together a better game today as the day progressed, vaulting back into the lead on the back nine.

After 12 holes today, Collings had pulled even for the championship but he couldn’t keep pace with Mancini to the finish, missing birdie putts within eight feet on each of the last three holes.

Collings, who won last week’s Amateur by rallying on the last day, finished with a one-under 69 today – the best score of the Mid-Amateur Championship so far – and stands at six-over 216 for three days.
