A Bosnian refugee convicted of raping a Winnipeg teen has been deported from Canada, Canada Border Services Agency officials say.

Elvedin Hegic, 31, was deported Friday, nine days after being released from prison, CBSA spokeswoman Lisa White said.

White couldn’t say what country he was sent to because of privacy and policy reasons, but said Hegic is permanently barred from returning to Canada.

In February 2006, Hegic was convicted of sexually assualting a 16-year-old girl at a party in 2001. Hegic raped the girl when the two were left alone when other partygoers went out to buy more beer, court was told. Hegic was found guilty after a four-day trial. At the time of his arrest, Hegic was in a Quebec jail for assaulting his wife.

The CBSA has been trying to deport Hegic since 2003, when a danger opinion was issued, which is required to deport refugees.

“Until his criminal matters were dealt with, we couldn’t remove him,” White said.

After becoming a permanent resident in 1997, Hegic quickly racked up his criminal rapsheet.

In 1999, Hegic was convicted of assault and uttering threats. In May 2000, he was convicted of robbery and a year later in May 2001 he was convicted of DUI. A month later, he was convicted of assault.

In 2002, Hegic moved to Quebec, where he was convicted of numerous more charges including assault, criminal harassment and confinement.
