WINNIPEG – Winnipeg writer Andrew Davidson has won another award for his debut novel, The Gargoyle.
Davidson picked up $1,000 Monday after his 2008 book was named the adult winner of the 2009 Sunburst Award for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic in Toronto.
The Sunbursts are given to Canadians who have published a speculative fiction novel or book-length collection any time during the previous calendar year.
This year’s winner in the young-adult category was London, England-based Cory Doctorow for his novel Little Brother.
Last April the U.S. Book-of-the-Month club gave The Gargoyle its 2008 First Fiction Award.
The book — a psychological thriller about religion, mental illness and mediaval history — also received nominations from the Canadian Booksellers Association and the Manitoba Book Awards.
Last week Winnipeg author Joan Thomas won the $7,500 Amazon.ca First Novel Award for her debut, Reading by Lightning.
