A pair of Manitoba rinks are now just two wins away from a coveted spot in the Olympic curling trials.
Both Jeff Stoughton and Mike McEwen won their opening games at the ‘Roar of the Rings’ pre-trials in Prince George, B.C. Tuesday night and will face each other Wednesday afternoon for a spot in the A-side final.
The winner of the A event, along with the B-event champ and the two C-event finalists, will earn the four spots available for the trials in Edmonton next month. The loser will still remain alive in the triple-knockout format.
Stoughton and his Charleswood foursome crushed Kelowna’s Bob Ursel 7-1 in eight ends on the late draw Tuesday while McEwen hammered fellow Assiniboine Memorial clubmate Kerry Burtnyk 8-2 in six ends.
Burtnyk and the other Manitoba squad in Prince George — Jason Gunnlaugson of Beausejour — are in action in Wednesday’s afternoon draw. Gunnlaugson will face Ted Appelman and Burtnyk meet Ursel.
