Teenager dies in Transcona

WINNIPEG — Family members have identified a man who was killed in Transcona early Saturday morning as Nolan Norman, who had just celebrated his 19th birthday on Nov. 9.

Norman was a former Murdoch MacKay Collegiate student who wanted to be a basketball player, but more recently started to think about joining the army, his cousin Ashley said.

His younger sister, who did not want to be named, said she heard he had attended a concert earlier Friday night. She believed he may have been involved a dispute over a woman.

Winnipeg police spokeswoman Const. Jacqueline Chaput said police were called around 3:20 this morning to the 7-Eleven at Regent Avenue and Day Street because of an injured man.

The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition suffering stab wounds to his upper body as well as other physical injuries.  He died in hospital.

Chaput said investigators believe the teen was assaulted in the 300 block of Victoria Avenue. Chaput said a number of people are in police custody and the investigation continues.

The death is Winnipeg’s 25th homicide of the year, Chaput said.

Meanwhile, police say the injuries of a man found in a bus shelter at Marion Street and St. Mary’s Road appear to be consistent with a fall, rather than with a stabbing as was earlier believed.

Chaput said police are still investigating whether the man fell or was pushed, and are trying to confirm if he had a previous medical condition.

Chaput did not know the man’s condition.
