ROCKFORD, ILL. — The Manitoba Moose are expecting a bruising battle here tonight against a Rockford IceHogs club with a roster that more closely resembles that of a football team than a hockey team.

The IceHogs, the Chicago Blackhawks affiliate, are perhaps the biggest and strongest team in the American Hockey League, with 10 players 6’3" or taller, 17 players 200-pounds plus and some genuinely Herculean defenseman.

That latter category includes Hogs defenseman Simon Danis-Papin, who clocks in at 6’7", 221 pounds and who couldn’t help but catch the eye of the Moose players here this morning as both clubs went through a morning skate.

JOE.BRYKSA@FREEPRESS.MB.CA Manitoba Moose Tommy Maxwell (left) and Toronto Marlies Richard Greenop throw some fists early in the first period during a Nov. 14 game. "It’s going to be a tough night for our defensemen," Maxwell said of tonight's game against the Rockford IceHogs.

Moose forward Tommy Maxwell, no shrinking violet himself at 6’2", 200 pounds, said he’s expecting a very physical game tonight.

“They like to dump the puck, get on the forecheck and then hammer guys,” Maxwell said. “It’s going to be a tough night for our defensemen.”

Moose head coach Scott Arniel agreed. “They’ve got some good size. And obviously they’ll be physical in this building, which they always are no matter what kind of team they have. They’ll finish their checks every opportunity.

“We have to make sure we’re just as physical back. And if they have big people, we have to make them turn, we have to make them skate and we want to make them play in their end of the rink.”

It all promises to be a rude introduction to the AHL for the newest member of the Moose, 5’10", 160-pound forward Dan Sexton.

Sexton was assigned to the Moose by the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday — he’d been playing for Bakersfield of the East Coast Hockey League — and will see his first AHL action tonight at Rockford’s Metro Centre.

The 22-year-old alumnus of the Bowling Green hockey program is undaunted.

“I’m really forward to getting the first game under my belt tonight and going into battle,” said Sexton. “It should be fun. I’m really excited.”

Tonight is the first of a three-game road swing for the Moose this week. They move on from here to play in Peoria on Friday and then in Chicago on Saturday.
