PEORIA— There will be a familiar surname in the opposing lineup here tonight as the Manitoba Moose take on the Peoria Rivermen.

And the odds are pretty good that Rivermen right winger Ryan Reaves— son of Blue Bombers great Willard Reaves— will be doing something tonight his mother back home in Winnipeg would rather he not do.

"My Mom wants me to stop fighting and start scoring some goals," Reaves said here this morning following his club’s morning skate.

"I don’t think she knows that’s not really my game."

Indeed, it isn’t and tonight is not likely to be any different for Reaves, who in 108 AHL games over three seasons with the Rivermen has registered 14 goals and 15 assists— and 245 minutes in penalties.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Reaves provides the muscle on a talented Rivermen club with a roster boasting a number of high draft picks, including centreman Lars Eller— a first-rounder (13th overall) in 2007 by the St. Louis Blues, parent club of the Rivermen.

Eller has three goals and 11 assists in 17 games with the Rivermen this season and also has a goal in a five-game stint in the NHL with the Blues. But he’s still recovering from an awkward fall into the boards in a game Wednesday night and is expected to be in the press box for tonight’s game against the Moose.

Reaves says Eller, who’s from Denmark and comes to the Rivermen from the Swedish leagues, is a treat to play with.

"He’s got some unbelievable skill. And for not that big a kid, he throws his body around pretty well… He’s a guy to watch for sure."

The Moose are undefeated in their last five games but head into tonight without their top defenceman Nolan Baumgartner, who broke a finger in a 2-1 win in Rockford Wednesday night and could be lost to the team for six weeks.

Reaves said he enjoys playing against the Moose and has already circled the final two games of the season on his April calendar, when the Rivermen play the Moose at MTS Centre.

"Hopefully they mean something," he says. "It’s fun playing against your home city."

Gametime tonight is 7 p.m.. Brian Munz will have the call live on CJOB.
