WINNIPEG — Homeowners in the northwest area of Winnipeg will be receiving garbage carts beginning Monday.
The carts are an essential component of the city’s automated garbage collection, which will begin in February.
City hall issued a statement Friday afternoon stating that it wanted all 42,000 homes in the northwest quadrant to have their garbage carts before the system goes into operation.
Under the new system, homeowners will toss their trash into the city-supplied carts, which they then will push to the curbs where they will be picked up by trucks with arms which will raise the carts and empty them.
Homes in the autobin areas will not be included in the automated collection system.
The planned start date for the new system is Feb. 2 for those on Day 1.
Homes on Day 2 are to start Feb. 3; Day 3 begins Feb. 11; Day 4, Feb. 22; Day 5, Feb. 16.
Along with the carts, homeowners will be provided with a detailed information package that will include: the schedule; where and how to position the cart; how to apply for walk-up service for residents not able to get their carts to the curb; maintaining the cart; what to do with waste that doesn’t fit into the cart.
More information on the automated garbage collection system can be found on the city website: www.winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste
