WINNIPEG – A Manitoba First Nation will receive $7.75 million over the next three years to help build a new all-season road on the east side of Lake Winnipeg.

The Hollow Water First Nation and the provincially owned East Side Road Authority announced the deal today.

The First Nation will crush, haul and spread gravel to improve the existing Rice River Forestry Road between Hollow Water and Bloodvein First Nation. It will also clear the right-of-way for the all-season road to Berens River First Nation.

As part of the deal, the road authority, an arm of the Manitoba Floodway Authority, will provide construction and heavy equipment operator training for about 50 Hollow Water residents.

Also under the agreement, Hollow Water First Nation will have to establish a separate corporate entity to carry out the road-building activities. The authority will help provide oversight to that new entity.

To date, the East Side Road Authority has signed road building and training agreements with Berens River First Nation ($11.25 million), Bloodvein First Nation ($7.75 million), and Wasagamack First Nation ($2.25 million) as it prepares to build the road. The project is still awaiting environmental approval.

The proposed east side road will connect Provincial Road 304 south of Hollow River to Berens River First Nation, a distance of 160 km. View a detailed map here (PDF file).  The project’s cost was not immediately available.

Construction is expected to begin in the fall.
