It's difficult enough for a mature, veteran team to make it to the semifinal of the Manitoba Curling Association Bonspiel, let alone one that is curling together for the first time, under a skip who's been away from the game for two years.

It’s difficult enough for a mature, veteran team to make it to the semifinal of the Manitoba Curling Association Bonspiel, let alone one that is curling together for the first time, under a skip who’s been away from the game for two years.

Still, Pembina Curling Club’s David Kraichy, who has been in Calgary the past two years earning a masters degree in industrial and organizational psychology, has been steamrolling through the Sports Manitoba main event quite nicely.

This morning at the Grain Exchange, Kraichy and his crew of third Jim Coleman, second Rylan Young, and lead Brad VanWalleghem beat West Kildonan’s Eugene Desjarlais 6-3 in six ends, and it wasn’t even close.

In order to keep the hammer, Kraichy blanked the first end, and it paid of with a big four in the second. "No that didn’t hurt at all," he said following the game. "It was a nice little break that we got early on."

In other main event games this morning, Doug Riach of West Kildonan beat Kevin Larson of Springfield 5-3, Derek Dowsett of Stonewall edged Allan Neyedly of Deer Lodge 4-3 and David Hamblin of Morris slipped by Adam Norget of Pembina 5-4.

In the semifinals today, on the 3 p.m. draw Kraichy and Riach will go head-to-head at the Pembina, and Dowsett and Hamblin play at the Victoria.
