WINNIPEG — Canadian actor Billy Merasty, who grew up in Brochet, was inducted into the Order of the Buffalo Hunt at a ceremony at the Legislative Building this morning.
Merasty, who is in Winnipeg this week to perform in Where the Blood Mixes at Prairie Theatre Exchange, has been a professional actor for 27 years.
His film and television credits include: Le Confessional, Exotica, Liberty Street, The Red Green Show, Moose TV and Stardom. He is also known for his portrayals of former Manitoba politician Elijah Harper and Donald Marshall, a Mi’kmaq man who was wrongly convicted of murder.
He has written two plays, Fireweed (1992) and Divinia (2001).
The Order of the Buffalo Hunt was founded in 1957 to recognize outstanding and distinctive contributions by Manitobans in such areas as politics, business, sports and education.
Merasty joins such notable inductees as artist Leo Mol, aboriginal leaders Dorothy Nepinak Betz and Mary Richard, and entertainers Neil Young, Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings.
