WINNIPEG — Winnipeggers can join a worldwide party tonight to celebrate the achievements of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
Manitoba Museum’s event will be the first in Winnipeg to mark Yuri’s Night.
In 1961, Gagarin was the first person to orbit the Earth. About 10 years ago, countries around the world started celebrating his major achievement, his 108-minute journey around the Earth in capsule Vostok 1. This year, revellers at more than 160 Yuri’s Night parties in 57 countries on seven continents, will commemorate Gagarin, who was killed in a jet crash seven years after his historic orbit.
Manitoba Museum’s celebration kicks off at 7 p.m. with a reception in the Science Gallery. Astronomer and all-round science guy Scott Young along with UFO researcher Chris Rutkoswki, Mars Society president Rob Dyck and other scientists will hold a group discussion on space travel. Tickets are $10 at the door. The party is a licensed event so you must be 18 years or older and have valid photo ID to prove it.
Winnipeg is the fourth Canadian city to join the Yuri’s Night movement.
