Michael Booth of Winnipeg won the 2010 Manitoba Marathon today and thrilled a large crowd at the University of Manitoba Stadium, taking his fourth men’s full marathon title and posting one of his best times, two hours and 32.32 minutes.
In close to ideal conditions, with the temperature in low 20s when he was on the course, Booth, 30, took the lead at about Mile 23 in the 26.2-mile event and won the race despite limited training due to his school and work commitments.
“Today’s race went absolutely perfect, I just kind of ran my own race and didn’t really worry about anyone else out there,” said Booth, noting he started feeling stronger around the halfway point and took the lead at about Mile 23 where he was spurred on from support from friends and co-workers at the Stride Ahead water station.
“I surely wasn’t expecting it (to win), It was just one of those days where I just lucked out a little bit, not being super fit going in, and things just came together really nicely.”
Cindy Sondag of Grand Forks won her second-straight title in the women’s full marathon, cracking the three-hour mark with a time of 2:59.18.
Gina Aalgaard Kelly of Lisbon, N.D., won the women’s half marathon with a time of 1:24.39 while Winnipeg’s Darcy Ready earned the men’s half marathon title with a time of 1:14.18, his fourth Manitoba title in that event.
A total of 13,686 participants took part in this year’s Manitoba Marathon, which supports the Manitoba Marathon Foundation’s projects for Manitobans living with intellectual challenges.
