A little bit of prairie pride will be sitting in the big chair at Global TV this fall.

Today, Global announced that Manitoba’s own Dawna Friesen, currently a London correspondent for NBC News, will be taking the reins of the Global National news program. Friesen, a Red River College graduate, will take over Kevin Newman’s anchor chair from September.

The move will bring Friesen back to Canada, after years travelling the globe. After growing up in small-town Manitoba, Friesen got her start working as a journalist in Portage la Prairie, Brandon and Saskatoon before moving up to national-level reporting in Ottawa. Since 1999, Friesen has served as a London correspondent for NBC. Last year, her team won an Emmy for the coverage of U.S. President Barack Obama’s successful election campaign.

In April, Newman announced he would leave Global National for "creative renewal," after nine years as one of the newscast’s founders. His last newscast will be on Aug. 20. Fill-in anchors will helm the ship until Friesen starts in September.
