He did everything right – and everything wrong – and in the end the latter category was the difference.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced this afternoon that they have released 25-year-old relief pitcher Drew Shetrone, whose maddening inconsistency this season proved to be too much for Fish manager Rick Forney.

Shetrone’s seven saves this season – who Winnipeg claimed from Joliet on June 27 – are tied for third in the Northern League. But it was his 0-6 win-loss record — which also puts him among the league leaders in losses – that earned Shetrone his walking papers as the Fish embark on a marathon 10 games-in-9-nights road trip that begins Tuesday afternoon in Rockford.

Shetrone’s ERA – 7.71 with the Goldeyes and 6.94 overall – also did him no favours with Forney, who will carry 11 pitchers and 10 position players into Rockford.

The 21 roster players is one less than the league maximum and the word around the team is that Forney is working the phones and hoping to add another position player to the roster this week.
