WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers severed ties with import special teams player Derrick Doggett this morning.

The 25-year-old linebacker joined the Bombers prior to Week 3, after seeing his release from the Pittsburgh Steelers at the end of June. Winnipeg didn’t bring in Doggett right away, but when it was apparent they needed help on kick coverage, he was summoned to bring some stability to the group.

Doggett had one special teams tackle in two game with the Bombers this season, but couldn’t find a significant role in the linebacking group. Ultimately, that inability to increase his value led to his release.

“With the injury to Marcellus Bowman, we were forced to go with players who have more experience in our system at the linebacker position. We thank Derrick for his hard work and great effort during his time as a Winnipeg Blue Bomber,” Bombers vice-president and general manager Joe Mack said in a team announcement.

Doggett left this message to his fans on his Twitter account this morning:

"Thanks to all my Winnipeg fans I enjoyed it here and you will be seeing me play somewhere else."

In 2009, the San Diego-native registered 27 special teams tackles in just 15 games with the Bombers.

His release leaves a gaping hole in the Bombers special teams. On Wednesday, the club officially announced that Shawn Gallant, the special teams captain who led the unit with 30 tackles last season, was placed on the nine-game injured list.

The Bombers are on the practice field this morning. Winnipeg plays in Calgary Saturday night.
