WINNIPEG — The soap opera that is the Winnipeg Blue Bomber kicking situation has a few new characters.

Three, to be exact.

The Bombers have added three new kickers and the trio joined the club at practice Sunday. Warren Kean, Justin Palardy and Ryan Elaschuk will challenge newcomer Louie Sakoda, who hasn’t hoofed a ball yet as the replacement to Alexis Serna, cut last week.

Sakoda pulled a calf muscle last Thursday and aggravated it further in the warm-up to Friday’s 39-28 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. That development forced the Bombers to use punter Mike Renaud and reserve linebacker Chris Smith as their placekicker on an emergency basis. It also meant the Bomber staff was on the phone seeking help immediately afterward.

Kean, drafted second overall by Edmonton in 2007, was with the Bombers in 2008 and most recently was in training camp with the Calgary Stampeders. Palardy, drafted by Hamilton this past spring out of St. Mary’s, was cut earlier this month as the Ticat punter, but entered the draft as the No. 2 kicking prospect behind the Stamps’ Rob Maver.

Elaschuk tried out for the Saskatchewan Roughriders last fall and most recently kicked with the Edmonton Wildcats junior team. He is the CJFL’s all-time points leader.
