WINNIPEG — Despite losing by 22 points last week, a Winnipeg Blue Bomber has been recognized for his efforts.
Thanks to his 74-yard punt return touchdown against the Montreal Alouettes Thursday, kick returner Jovon Johnson was named the Gibson’s Finest special teams player of the week today. Johnson finished the game with six punt returns for 105 yards and the major, as Winnipeg (2-6) fell to Montreal (6-2) 39-17 at Percival Molson Stadium.
It’s the second time in eight weeks Johnson has won the award. The third-year Bomber picked up the special teams honour following his performance in a Week 4 win over Edmonton.
The 26-year-old has 449 punt return yards and two touchdowns this season – both tops in the CFL.
Other Gibson’s Finest player of the week winners include Alouettes running back Brandon Whitaker (offensive player) and linebacker Chip Cox (defensive player), as well as Toronto Argonauts receiver Andre Durie (top Canadian).
Currently on a bye week, the Bombers return to action Sept. 5 when they face the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Labour Day Classic.
