WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have ended a five-game losing skid, beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-2.
Running back Fred Reid picked his way through the Riders defence for an eight-yard-touchdown run seven minutes into the game, capping off a seven-play, 66-yard opening drive for the Blue and Gold. Reid, underused in Winnipeg’s 27-23 loss in the Labour Day Classic a week ago, accounted for most on the yardage on the drive.
After the Bombers recovered the kick-off (thanks to a whiff by Riders return man Dominique Dorsey on the catch), Justin Palardy booted a 38-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 10 points.
The Winnipeg defence made their presence felt later in the quarter when DE Odell Willis stuffed the Riders RB Wes Cates on a third-and-one gamble inside the Bombers 20 yard line.
Reid was back at it three minutes into the second quarter, when he broke a 61-yard run for another touchdown. It was Reid’s longest run of the year. Winnipeg back-up QB Alex Brink dove into the endzone from a yard out to close out the scoring at the half.
Saskatchewan has won the last two Banjo Bowls heading into today’s game.
