VANCOUVER — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ chance of winning a playoff spot is all but dead after they lost 16-14 to the B.C. Lions Saturday night.
Lions kicker Paul McCallum connected on a 19-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining to provide the game’s winning points and a last-gasp attempt to move into scoring range ended in Bomber territory with a desperate Terence Jeffers-Harris to Terrence Edwards lateral.
After building a 10-0 lead at the intermission against the B.C. Lions Saturday night, the Bombers completely fell apart in the third quarter and the game was tied 10-10 by the quarter’s end.
B.C. quarterback Travis Lulay sparked the turnaround, rushing for a TD and using his legs to help set up a Paul McCallum 40-yard field goal that tied the game.
Quarterback Steven Jyles hooked up with Terrence Edwards for a 58-yard TD and Justin Palardy hit from 17 yards out to give the Bombers the advantage at the intermission. The Bomber TD was set up by a turnover as Geroy Simon was rocked by Deon Beasley with the ensuing fumble scooped up by Marcellus Bowman.
The Bombers, 3-10, desperately needed to win tonight and next week against the Lions, 5-8, in order to stay in the playoff fight as a possible West-Division crossover team.
