WINNIPEG – Incumbent mayor Sam Katz has pledged to spend $2 million on a new recreation complex at the University of Winnipeg.
The approximately $20-million complex – the design is still underway – will include an indoor soccer component, Katz told a crowd of students and reporters at the Spence Street Promenade outside the university.
The facility will complement the indoor-soccer complex at the University of Manitoba by offering inner-city youth a soccer venue, said Katz, before he donned a U of W Wesmen jacket. Another soccer facility is needed in the North End, Katz added.
University president Lloyd Axworthy thanked Katz for his dedication but refused to endorse the mayor’s re-election bid.
Axworthy called the timing of the announcement coincidental to the election. He said he was not concerned the $2 million would evaporate if Katz does not win on Oct. 27.
Axworthy said the Manitoba NDP also made an election-period pledge to the university in May 2007.
The new facility would rise alongside Spence Street between the Duckworth Centre and the new bus loop near Portage Avenue. The facility will require federal and private-sector money as well.
